Gereltuya Tumur, Principal Second Violin
Born in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, violinist Gereltuya Tumurbaatar began studying the violin at the age of 7 at The Music and Dance College in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia under the guidance of Amarsanaa Danzan. In 2008, she got accepted with full scholarship to the The United World College of the Adriatic in Italy where she studied music with legendary musicians from Trio di Trieste and Trio di Parma and in 2010 she graduated with the international baccalaureate diploma. Following her graduation, she received full scholarship from the Boston Conservatory in Boston, MA where she studied under the guidance of Markus Placci and earned her bachelor’s degree in violin performance.
She participated in the Clinton Global Initiative conference, organized by the former president Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton for young leaders in 2014 and presented her project “The UB Project”.
She is also a recipient of the “Davis Project for Peace” grant and in the summer of 2014 she organized “The UB Project” in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia where she taught music/violin at several orphanages and performed a concert with young professional musicians.
In 2014 She was selected as a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and played with the world renowned musicians and conductors such as Yo Yo Ma, Semyon Bychkov and Nicholas Kraemer. In 2017-2018, Gereltuya taught violin at several Chicago Public school programs as well as at the “Music House” school of performing arts. In the summer of 2019, she completed the teacher training course at the Chicago Suzuki Institute and is now a certified suzuki teacher. In 2022, she took part in “Belonging”, a music program dedicated for the asian heritage month organized by the Forth Worth Opera company where she collaborated with other asian artists and performed Mongolian and other asian music.
She is currently teaching private lessons and is an active freelance musician performing regularly with different orchestras, ensembles and bands throughout Chicago area. Her performances brought her to the venues such as The Chicago symphony hall, Sanders Theatre at Harvard, South shore cultural center, Thalia hall, Renzo Piano Pavilion among many others. She has been broadcast live on WGN TV and WGN Radio of Chicago and has performed at Lollapalooza music festival among others.
